The first Capitol was a two-story brick building that was completed in 1858. This building burned in 1890. In 1896 the Chickasaw legislature appropriated funds for construction of a new capitol building, which was completed in 1898. The building is built of native granite quarried north of Tishomingo. The granite was transported to Denison, Texas for polishing, and brought back to Tishomingo for construction.
