Texas
County Courthouses

THIRTY TWO YEARS IN THE MAKING

This project began in 1973 with a goal to photograph courthouses in all 254 Texas Counties in just a few years. However, after 1977 no courthouses were added to the collection until 2001 when the quest was started anew. Finally, in 2005 all of the counties have been visited. Most of the buildings photographed in the 70's have been revisited but not all. So there is a blend of black and white photography with color on this site.  Updates with new images will be added periodically on an on-going basis.

An attempt has been made to photograph not only current courthouse buildings, but also former courthouses that are still standing. Some of the older buildings have been adapted for other uses such as museums, libraries, and community centers. Others are abandoned and in poor condition or in ruin.

One of the challenges in photographing some courthouse buildings are trees. In some cases the trees on the courthouse grounds have grown so large that they obscure a clear view of the structure.

Thanks for looking.

TWINS

Architcts sometimes saved time and money by using the same basic design for more than one courthouse. Here are some examples:

Blanco and Concho Caldwell and Goliad Comal and Lee
Dallam, Freestone, and Lynn Fort Bend and Hays Marion and Roberts Stonewall and Throckmorton

A LITTLE TEXAS HISTORY

The settlement of Texas took place during five distinct periods: as a part of Mexico, the Republic of Texas, United States statehood, the Confedrate States of America, and finally the post Civil War period. Churches and courthouses were usually among the first structures built as they are important symbols that the spiritual and security needs of a new commuity are being met.

The Republic of Texas Congress mandated that county seats be established within 5 miles of the geographical center of the county. As large counties split the center of the county shifted and county seats had to be relocated. Then as railroads built through the area, some seats of government were by-passed. Many of these towns disappeared and new county seats sprung up next to the tracks, often sponsed by the railroad itself.

The Texas Historical Commission is in the process of sponsering the restoration of older courthouse buildings. Some courthouses have endured remodeling programs over the years that have buried the original architecture under a more modern-looking facade. Where possible these structures are being restored to their original look, but with updated utilities and a modern working environment. Some of these buildings will need to be photographed again once the project has been completed.

The Handbook of Texas Online, a joint project of The General Libraries at the University of Texas at Austin and the Texas State Historical Association, is an excellent resource for Texas historical information including Texas Courthouse History. Many of the hot links in the following Texas Courthouse pages connect to this comprehensive archive.
