COUNTY ORGANIZED: 1846 COUNTY NAMED FOR: Lewis Cass, a United States Senator from Michigan who had favored the annexation of Texas. COUNTY SEATS: Two - Jefferson (now in Marion County) and Linden. COUNTY SEAT NAMED FOR: The townsite was laid out by a Major Wood, who named it for his former home in Linden, Tennessee. COURTHOUSES: Three - Jefferson in 1846; Linden in 1853 and 1865. STANDING: One - 1865 Classical Revival courthouse built of brick. Construction began on the courthouse in 1861, but it was not completed until after the Civil War. It was enlarged in 1900 and 1917, and the third floor was added in 1933 after a fire. LINKS: Cass County |
