COUNTY ORGANIZED: 1836 (orginally named Harrisburg County) COUNTY NAMED FOR: John R. Harris, early Harris County settler and founder of Harrisburg, TX. COUNTY SEATS: One - Houston. COUNTY SEAT NAMED FOR: Sam Houston. COURTHOUSES: Eight - 1838, 1851, 1883, 1910, 1953. In addition, there are the Family Law Center, Criminal Justice Center (2000), and Civil Courthouse (2005) buildings. STANDING: Five -1910 Beaux- ARTS courthouse built of granite and brick (vacant), the 1953 Modern courthouse built of marble and granite (now the Juvinal Justice Center), the Family Law Center, the 2000 Criminal Justice Center, and the 2005 Civil Courthouse.
