COUNTY ORGANIZED: 1881 COUNTY NAMED FOR: Settlers Josiah P. and Mathias Wilbarger. COUNTY SEATS: One - Vernon COUNTY SEAT NAMED FOR: Though sources disagree, Vernon was probably named either for George Washington's Mount Vernon or for a traveling whiskey salesman named Vernon Brown.
